Is America a good place to visit?

I've never been on a holiday with my family outside of Australia and I've been to beautiful places (North QLD, Great Barrier Reef, Broome etc) but we want to go overseas to America and Hawaii. Mum and dad have already been to Hawaii and they told me it was beautiful but is America a good place to visit (in terms of the beach, weather, site-seeing). Will I be disapointed?

America is a massive place so you can't generalize it. If you come go to New York, Hawai, Miami, L.A, or San Fransico.... don't waste your time anywhere else.

Excerpt: Dead Calm is a 1989 thriller film starring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane. It was based on the 1963 novel of the same name by Charles Williams. The film was directed by Australian filmmaker Phillip Noyce and filmed in the Great Barrier Reef. A troubled couple, Australian naval officer John Ingram (Neill) and his wife Rae (Kidman), take a vacation on their yacht to recover over the death of their son from an automobile accident which Rae was involved in. John hopes that this will help Rae cope with the loss. Their holiday turns into a nightmare after they rescue Hughie Warriner (Zane) from a damaged wood-hulled schooner on the open seas; a man who claims his shipmates died from food poisoning. Suspicious of Hughie's story, John tries to convince the panicked Hughie to return with him to his sinking ship so they can confirm the deaths and salvage anything of use, but Hughie refuses to go back. John tells Rae to arm herself with the ship's rifle as he takes the schooner's dinghy back to the sinking ship while Hughie is resting. There he finds a video camera that gives evidence that Hughie and a friend had hired attractive but ill-prepared women as the ship's crew. Hughie's friend (who's idea it had been to hire the women as crew, and who had served as captain of the schooner with Hughie as first mate) had drowned in the bilge during the storm while trying to plug a stress fracture in the hull, leaving Hughie alone and unable to cope with the screams of the panicked women. Hughie had locked the women in a berth so that he wouldn't hear their screams, and the berth had subsequently flooded during the storm, drowning the women who had banged and clawed at the door begging to be freed as the space filled with water. When he awakes, Hughie, ... More:

 Alone Near Alice: Australia's Outback

Alone Near Alice: Australia's Outback

$17.95

On their second trip to Australia, Ruth and Harold met a couple during a Great Barrier Reef cruise. They and their children eventually became great friends. Lynette and Rob had lived in Washington, DC and had traveled all over the world, but they had never been to the Outback. So when the opportunity to explore it under the sponsorship of the highly respected National Trust appeared, they seized the chance and invited the Harbaughs along. The almost three week journey involved one widely traveled American couple, 14 reserved Aussies, and a driver named Dave. Together they explored deserted telegraph stations, hidden water holes, and compelling Outback attractions rarely seen by outsiders. The well educated Australians aboard were expecting a university scholar to conduct this 8,000 mile circle that included 5 of the 7 Australian States and 1 Territory, but they ended up with Dave, a mate whose favorites subjects were beer, fishing, and lame, politically incorrect jokes.

Excerpt: Captain James Cook FRS RN (7 November 1728 14 February 1779) was an English explorer, navigator and cartographer, ultimately rising to the rank of Captain in the Royal Navy. Cook was the first to map Newfoundland prior to making three voyages to the Pacific Ocean during which he achieved the first European contact with the eastern coastline of Australia and the Hawaiian Islands as well as the first recorded circumnavigation of New Zealand. Cook joined the British merchant navy as a teenager and joined the Royal Navy in 1755. He saw action in the Seven Years' War, and subsequently surveyed and mapped much of the entrance to the Saint Lawrence River during the siege of Quebec. This allowed General Wolfe to make his famous stealth attack on the Plains of Abraham, and helped to bring Cook to the attention of the Admiralty and Royal Society. This notice came at a crucial moment both in his personal career and in the direction of British overseas exploration, and led to his commission in 1766 as commander of HM Bark Endeavour for the first of three Pacific voyages. Cook charted many areas and recorded several islands and coastlines on European maps for the first time. His achievements can be attributed to a combination of seamanship, superior surveying and cartographic skills, courage in exploring dangerous locations to confirm the facts (for example dipping into the Antarctic circle repeatedly and exploring around the Great Barrier Reef), an ability to lead men in adverse conditions, and boldness both with regard to the extent of his explorations and his willingness to exceed the instructions given to him by the Admiralty. Cook died in Hawaii in a fight with Hawaiians during his third exploratory voyage in the Pacific in 1779. Portrait of James Coo... More:

100 Places to Go Before They Disappear

100 Places to Go Before They Disappear

$15.24

What would our world look like if the planet's average temperature were to rise by only a few degrees? Venice, Bangkok, London, Chicago, and New York would experience severe flooding. The tea fields of Sri Lanka and the vineyards of France would suffer heat and drought. Beijing and Timbuktu would be transformed into deserts, and the Great Barrier Reef's coral colonies would die. The entire nation of Tuvalu would sink into the Pacific Ocean. As plants and animals vital to local ecosystems continue to perish due to climate change, the face of our planet is already being transformed. "100 Places to Go Before They Disappear" features the locations on all seven continents in the greatest danger of disappearing within our lifetime. With an essay by Desmond Tutu, this stunning book will inspire travelers and environmentalists to save gorgeous places that might soon be only a memory.
