His entertaining and intelligent guidebook gives the traveler a wonderful, and very personalized, introduction to this enigmatic country. In 1768 James Cook, on an epic sea journey that secured his place in history, discovered Australia. One hundred years later, countering cherished legends, George Collingridge dared to claim that the Portuguese had gotten to Australia first. Now Vanessa Collingridge, his distant cousin, unravels the strange tale of history's most fascinating explorer and the man who sought to dethrone him. Collingridge charts Captain Cook's celebrated voyages: He mapped the Pacific Islands, circumnavigated Antarctica, charted New Zealand, and discovered the New Hebrides and Australia, curing scurvy along the way. He was shipwrecked on the Great Barrier Reef, cruised with sails frozen amid two-hundred-foot-tall icebergs, struggled to keep his crew from losing battles with alcohol and Polynesian women, and somehow managed to stay one step ahead of competing French and Spanish explorers. Over his twenty-one years of adventure-until his murder on a beach in Kealakekua Bay in Hawaii in 1779-Cook changed the Western map of the world. Or so schoolchildren were taught. In 1883 British aristocrat George Collingridge sailed Down Under in search of adventure-and came across maps of Australia dated 1542 and 1546, drawn in northern France but based on Portuguese originals, suggesting that Cook was not the first to reach Australia. The proposal would prove Collingridge's undoing-and yet it is a controversy that lives on.

What would our world look like if the planet's average temperature were to rise by only a few degrees? Venice, Bangkok, London, Chicago, and New York would experience severe flooding. The tea fields of Sri Lanka and the vineyards of France would suffer heat and drought. Beijing and Timbuktu would be transformed into deserts, and the Great Barrier Reef's coral colonies would die. The entire nation of Tuvalu would sink into the Pacific Ocean. As plants and animals vital to local ecosystems continue to perish due to climate change, the face of our planet is already being transformed. "100 Places to Go Before They Disappear" features the locations on all seven continents in the greatest danger of disappearing within our lifetime. With an essay by Desmond Tutu, this stunning book will inspire travelers and environmentalists to save gorgeous places that might soon be only a memory.

I'm going to Australia for a week and a half. I heard it's his downfall at the moment and I looked online for the weather and said it was in the mid-60 to 70? Especially need help on what to bring with me. Like the kind of clothes? Some of the time, I'll be in Sydney, and the other part I'll be on an island and the Great Barrier Reef. Also, my parents told me that going to be rainy for I need a windbreaker and rain rate of the jacket? or just a regular guy sweatshirt jacket? If you could answer these two questions that would be awesome! And I just said anything that is needed know what to wear / bring. A packing list would be great! (Just a little information, I will be the site now and going on the beach of the island) Oh, and this totally non- has nothing to do with the question, but what is your favorite summer style right now?
Actually it's winter now. It can be wet everywhere, however it is technically the dry season in the northern region around the Barrier Reef. In general, jeans and a jacket is enough to Sydney, but I would suggest some form of rain, wind break / in your luggage in case the weather turns cold and wet as it had been the last 2 weeks here. Most tropical islands are sitting around the middle - high 80's at this point, so light clothing and even summer gear should do the trick for you. Waters are also still generally warm enough for swimming. Also be sure to pack a 30 + SPF sunscreen, or buy some here, for use in the tropics and the sun still burns. Also a good wide-brimmed hat will not go astray, believe me it's a better view of sunburn. In you Sydney should be able to get away without them. To give you a better idea to think about Sydney's climate similar to San Francisco during the winter, and tropical islands as similar to going to the Florida Keys during the winter.
