Are Herbs Weeds or Treasures?

Many herbs have been introduced into Australia and because they are not native plants, they have often few competitors for resources such as water, soil nutrients and light and have few predators. Subsequently, these plants can grow and spread unchecked, endangering native vegetation and even various animal species such as birds and insects.

Weeds certainly can be a real threat to native flora, fauna, rain forests and even aquatic ecosystems. Recalcitrant herbs are targeted by the authorities for eradication or sprayed on an ongoing basis, in an attempt to control their spread and protect sensitive ecosystems.

You don’t need to go to exotic places like the rain forests to find medicinal plants, they usually grow right at your feed; on footpaths, roadsides, garbage dumps, even in your garden.

Given that most medicinal plants are weeds and because weeds grow as prolifically as they do, they are often easy to cultivate – you will actually have more of a problem keeping them in a designated area, rather than a problem growing them.

Wildcrafted herbs are herbs gathered from the wild. The advantage of wildcrafted herbs is that these generally are very healthy and full of the desired medicinal properties. Wildcrafted herbs are usually native to an area and thus are not weeds. They often occur in clusters and grow in ‘ideal’ conditions under which they can attain their full medicinal potential.

A problem with wildcrafting medicinal plants occurs where there is little or no control over the amount that can be harvested at any one time or by any one person, at least this is the case in Australia. This can decimate a local population of wild medicinal plants. Taking of any vegetation is illegal without authorisation in Australian National Parks and protected areas for this reason.

Some medicinal plants are actually becoming rare and endangered and the harvesting of these species should at the very least be regulated. Better still, organic farming of such herbs should be encouraged and promoted. This would provide struggling farmers with alternative cash crops during times when their primary sources of income are not performing well.

Weeds or Treasures - it really does not matter what you call them, the fact remains they are often very powerful medicinal plants that have the potential to address many of today's major health problems and they have done so for thousands of years...

Planting In Clay Soil

Clay tends to stick together and feels like a sticky plastic ball. Drainage and aeration is poor, but, do not despair, there is a way to improved soil, where particles are loosened into crumbs which improves airspace and drainage.

Break up the clay as best you can using a garden spade/fork or maybe even a pickaxe. I found that by adding gypsum was extremely beneficial in improving the clay soil. Approximately 1kg of gypsum to every square metre of top soil. Add in some organic matter which is animal manure/compost/ash/sawdust etc, (Tip: do not use potting mix) at a rate of around a third organic matter to around two thirds of the existing clay soil. Cultivate this topsoil as well as you can (about 15-20cm in depth). Leave a day or two before planting, then water your plants in well.

It is very important to mulch to stop the surface from caking. I prefer to use sugar cane mulch as it is inexpensive and when it breaks down it helps to improve the soil, but realistically any mulch is beneficial to any type of soil.

Finally, do not give up on your clay soil. Keep topping up with organic matter (animal manure/compost etc) and gypsum or with liquid fertilizers and clay breaker, preferably on a yearly basis and you will be reaping the benefits for years to come.

Yes, you can grow just about anything in clay soil from Australian Natives to beautiful flourishing roses.

I just want to share my experiences with people that are just starting out like me by offering handy down to earth practical advice. When we started on the landscaping (is it ever finished ?!) we got lots of advise from different people "you will never be able to grow anything" to "you can grow just about anything in clay soil". I am finding out that you can grow just about anything in clay soil with just a little know how.

About the Author

Just A Little About Me

I am not an expert gardener by any means. My husband and I bought and built a house on a large parcel of land in suburbia, Brisbane, Queensland in 2007. We are pretty lucky to have just over 1700sqm of land which our two dogs absolutely love.

We both work full time and needed the garden to be pretty hardy. When someone gives me a plant or cutting and says to me “you can’t kill it” or “it’s hardy…will grow anywhere”, I tend to groan inwardly because they are the last words I want to hear because chances are I will ! Just ask my husband !

I just want to share my experiences with people that are just starting out like me by offering handy down to earth practical advice. When we started on the landscaping (is it ever finished ?!) we got lots of advise from different people “you will never be able to grow anything” to “you can grow just about anything in clay soil”. I am finding out that you can grow just about anything in clay soil with just a little know how.

Anyway, I really hope you enjoy my blurb and come back to visit again soon. For all you expert gardeners out there all tips and hints are greatly appreciated.

Happy pottering everyone  .

Native Tattoo Meanings and Customs

Today many parents panic if their child gets a tattoo at some point in their life. Many think of it as a degrading practice that symbolizes rebellion. But it should be remembered that tattooing was and is an art that came naturally to various native peoples for hundreds of years. Tattooing has been a native custom in many tribes or races across the world, although the origin of it varied within each tribe or race. The Tattoo, over the years, has signified caste, citizenship, servility, pride or marital status for many races.

In the Hawaiian Islands tattooing was common prior to 1800 and would indicate what tribe or district you came from. The material used for coloring in native tattooing was vermillion, carbon, gunpowder and indigo. These were embedded in the skin with sharp knives or hand-made needles. Members of the Tucanoe tribe were known for three vertical blue lines tattooed on the body. This was an indication they belonged to that tribe.

In the South China Sea area where Borneo, the Philippines, Sumatra and Java are, tattooing was also common among the natives. In Borneo, members of the Kyan, Pakatan and Kermowit tribes were the only tribes where everyone was tattooed. Oddly, they were considered the least brave tribes in the area. Still their tattoos indicated they were part of a particular group. Another Borneo tribe, the Dyaks, tattooed all of the married women, usually on the hands and feet and possibly the thighs. It was considered a privilege for the married woman and a sign of dignity.

In the Polynesian Islands such as Tahiti, a tribe known as the Otaheites appeared to tattoo themselves for religious significance. Common tattoos among them were squares, circles and crescents, along with men and dog tattoos. In this tribe every person was tattooed without exception as they reached adulthood. In Fiji only women were tattooed in a tradition dating back hundreds of years. It was believed that they were tattooed more for adornment than any other reason. A tattoo was seen as a decoration that beautified the women in preparation to find or keep a husband.

Among native Australian tribes it was common, and is today, to tattoo yourself with the group’s totem, Otherwise known as a Wingong. A totem was a creature, plant or animal that the tribe believed they descended from. It could be a turtle, elk, owl, Cray-fish or snake, for instance. It might be considered the tribe’s logo.

In Burma tattooing has always been a sign of manhood. Early explorers of the islands saw almost no man without a tattoo. The leg was a popular spot to have one. It was witnessed that tattoo artists would go around with books of designs which contained every symbol for warding off any kind of evil or for bringing good luck.

Native American tribes were advocates of tattooing. The married women of the Apaches and Yumas in Arizona traditionally were distinguished by a tattoo consisting of several blue lines from the lower lip to the chin. It was also known that when a young female was wishing to become a mother, she would tattoo the figure of a child on her forehead. As well, Mojave women, after marriage would tattoo vertical blue lines on their chin.

Within native tribes and in specific geographic locations, the art of tattooing has been a long tradition. In the modern world the tattoo is used more for personal decoration of the body, and personal meaning than it is for customary 'tribal type' purposes such as designating a group, although violent gangs many times have a common tattoo. For most it is popular to merely acquire a tattoo that has a personal meaning, and for others it is simply a fancy adornment.

Animal Identification: Identifying Livestock with RFID after a Disaster

Animal Identification is used for many purposes, like cattle disease traceability, herd management, age and source verification, and the list goes on. Using Radio Identification technology (RFID) adds value beyond its actual cost of the tag. RFID ear tags provide a wealth of secure individual identification, which is beneficial to cattle and livestock producers now and down the road.

Livestock-ID, is a blog that provides full resources for animal identification, with tips, articles, resources. The cattle producer dedicated blog also gives links to government rebates for livestock identification.

Herd Management:

The benefits of RFID in herd management, allows ranchers to verify individual livestock quickly, and since each tag is unique, there is no errors in the actual identify of an individual animal. Livestock can be grouped and identified quickly and easily with RFID readers.

Animal Disease Traceability:

This is one of the most crucial and required need for unique error free identification, since most livestock usually go to a feedlot  or assembly yard before slaughter, this is the most likely place for animal disease testing. Being able to have the actual identity of that animal, along with a complete historic trace of the animal movements is a prerequisite for health officials, RFID ear tags provides this essential requirement.

Natural Disaster:

In the event of a natural disaster, such as tornadoes, floods, and destruction, the need to identify animals is needed, with the ability to do so quickly, easily, and safely.  The economic effect identification has on livestock is imperative to recover, retrieve and return cattle, sheep, and horses to its farm of origin. Only RFID tags have the ability to read the identification of an animal quickly, and search a national database for the original farm the animal belongs too.

A perfect example of a natural disaster is the events of Australia, and the cyclone that had hit the Queensland hard. Livestock-ID blog has a post outlining the actual method used by Australia in identifying cattle. Read Australian Cattle Recovery with RFID. the post shows how beneficial RFID is to the cattle industry and how the NLIS using its database to benefit cattle producers.

 Agroforestry Guides for Pacific Islands

Agroforestry Guides for Pacific Islands

$58.23

Pacific Islanders were once among the most self-sufficient and well-nourished peoples in the world. Their traditional agricultural systems integrated trees with production, a practice known as agroforestry. This book provides practical guidelines for planting and using trees in landscapes, gardening, and farming. Information on over 300 Pacific Island agroforestry species is provided. Topics covered include traditional Pacific Island multipurpose trees and their uses, understory intercropping, land rehabilitation, expanding traditional agroforests, nontimber forest products, windbreak design, timber and fruit production, financial analysis for agroforestry, and more. About the Authors Craig Elevitch and Kim Wilkinson are agroforestry specialists based in Hawaii, who collaborated with other agricultural workers and specialists in Fiji, American Samoa, Guam, Hawaii, the Federated States of Micronesia, Australia, and the Northern Mariana Islands to design this publication based on their user's needs. They manage the Hawai'iki Agroforestry Project on the Island of Hawaii, and are editors for the electronic agroforestry journal The Overstory, with subscribers in over 130 countries. Randy Thaman, Ph.D., is Professor of Pacific Island Biogeography at the University of the South Pacific, Suva, Fiji. He also serves as chairman of the Fiji National Food and Nutrition Committee. Thaman is the author of several important books, including Agroforestry in the Pacific Islands: Systems for Sustainability (United Nations University Press, 1993).

Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management [With DVD]

Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management [With DVD]

$25.12

In its early days, agroforestry may have been viewed as the domain of the landcare enthusiast. Today, integrating trees and shrubs into productive farming systems is seen as a core principle of sustainable agriculture. Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management provides the foundation for an understanding of agroforestry practice in both high and low rainfall zones across Australia. Three major areas are discussed: environmental functions of trees in the landscape (ecosystem mimicry, hydrology, protection of crops, animals and soil, biodiversity, aesthetics); productive functions of trees (timber, firewood, pulp, fodder, integrated multi-products); and the implementation of agroforestry (design, evaluation, establishment, adoption, policy support). The book also includes a DVD that features videos on forest measurement and harvesting; Treesmart, an agroforestry species database; a Farm Forestry Toolbox; a Farm Forestry & Agroforestry Reference Library and many regionally specific agroforestry resources. Agroforestry for Natural Resource Management is an essential resource for students in agroforestry courses, as well as a valuable introduction to the field for professionals in related areas.Features Wide coverage of the topic, from a ‘principles’ perspective Written by leading researchers and practitioners from around Australia, with expertise in agronomy, forestry, natural resource management, community and molecular ecologies, agricultural economics, soil science, hydrology, landscape architecture and rural sociology Comprehensive and integrated treatment of the environmental roles and productive potential of agroforestry across southern Australia Comprehensive and readily useable agroforestry and farm forestry resource base on DVD

 Proximal Soil Sensing

Proximal Soil Sensing

$138.73

This book reports on developments in Proximal Soil Sensing (PSS) and high resolution digital soil mapping. PSS has become a multidisciplinary area of study that aims to develop field-based techniques for collecting information on the soil from close by, or within, the soil. Amongst others, PSS involves the use of optical, geophysical, electrochemical, mathematical and statistical methods. This volume, suitable for undergraduate course material and postgraduate research, brings together ideas and examples from those developing and using proximal sensors and high resolution digital soil maps for applications such as precision agriculture, soil contamination, archaeology, peri-urban design and high land-value applications, where there is a particular need for high spatial resolution information. The book in particular covers soil sensor sampling, proximal soil sensor development and use, sensor calibrations, prediction methods for large data sets, applications of proximal soil sensing, and high-resolution digital soil mapping.Key themes: soil sensor sampling – soil sensor calibrations – spatial prediction methods – reflectance spectroscopy – electromagnetic induction and electrical resistivity – radar and gamma radiometrics – multi-sensor platforms – high resolution digital soil mapping - applicationsRaphael A. australia iceberg
that controls the movement of icebergs in Australia?

Mathematician and engineer Dr. David Evans, who did carbon accounting in Australia Government, recently detailed his conversion to a skeptic. "I devoted six years to carbon accounting, building models for the Australian government to estimate carbon emissions from land use change and forestry. When this work began in 1999, the evidence that carbon emissions caused global warming seemed pretty conclusive, but since then new evidence has weakened the case that carbon emissions are the main cause. Now I'm skeptical, "he wrote Evans in an April 30, 2007 blog. "But after 2000 the evidence for carbon emissions gradually got weaker - better temperature data for the last century, more detailed ice data base, then laboratory tests that cosmic rays precipitate low clouds, "Evans wrote." As famously said of Lord Keynes: "When the facts change, I change my mind. What do you do, sir?" he added. Evans noted how they benefited from climate fears as a scientist. "And the political realm in turn fed money back into the scientific community. In late 1990, a lot of jobs depend on the idea that carbon emissions caused global warming. Many of them were bureaucratic, but there was a lot of science jobs created too. I was on that gravy train, so a high wage in a science job that would not have existed if you do not believe carbon emissions caused global warming. And there were many people around me, and there were international conferences full of such people. And we support Politically, the ear of government, big budgets, and we felt fairly important and useful (well, I did anyway). It was great. We were working to save the planet! But from around 2000, the last three of the four pieces of evidence outlined above fell or reversed, "Evans wrote." The the pre-2000 ice core data was the central evidence for believing that atmospheric carbon caused temperature increases. The ice core data shows that warming new past were * not * initially caused by rises in atmospheric carbon, and says nothing about the strength of any extension. This piece of evidence has a reasonable doubt that atmospheric carbon had any role in past warmings, while still allowing the possibility that he had a supporting role, "he added." Unfortunately, politics and science have become even more tangled. The science of global warming has become a partisan political issue, so positions become more entrenched. Politicians and the public prefer simple and less nuanced messages. At the moment the political climate strongly supports carbon emissions as the cause of global warming, to the point of sometimes rubbishing or silencing critics, "he said. (Evans bio link)

Australian Animals Habitat

Cane Toad ... a serious threat to Australian wildlife

I first came upon them in a campsite in Central Queensland. That was about forty years ago, soon after we arrived in Australia from England. I got up in the middle of the night and found that the sprinklers had come on and the grass beneath my bare feet was comfortably wet.

I took a step forward and something brushed against me. I jumped back fearing a snake and the thing hopped away. The movements were froglike but the thumps were far too heavy for a frog.

I returned to the tent, put on a pair of shoes and armed myself with a torch.  The lawn outside was covered in    toads with bodies the size of saucers. The huge amphibians were luxuriating in the wet grass, grunting contentedly as the torch flicked over them.

I skirted the sprinklers, reached the toilet block and was confronted by an even more impressive sight. The lights came on automatically and the floor was suddenly alive. Toads were everywhere, fleeing into cubicles and piling up in corners as they tried to escape.

Mounds formed and collapsed as squirming bodies fed themselves down outlet pipes.
We were living in Canberra at the time and the cane toad had not yet reached that far south. Years earlier, it had been introduced into northern Australia to eat beetles threatening the sugarcane crops. Like many attempts to solve ecological problems, the solution was far from ideal. The toad found habitats outside the cane fields and was soon competing with native amphibians for food and territory.

Many native species are now threatened. The toad has reached South Australia and stringent measures are in place to prevent it from crossing into West Australia. The conclusion of many experts is that the measures will ultimately fail and the most we can do is delay the creature's march across the continent.

Like many householders, I do my bit. I kill the toads whenever I see them and create habitats in my garden for native frogs. The toad has poisonous glands and care must be taken when handling it. A neighbour lost a dog that bit one. Other people have lost cats.

Our customs officers are as strict about plants and animals as they are about drugs. Please cooperate. You could be carrying an environmental time bomb in your luggage. The smallest things can multiply with appalling consequences.

I took the photo (above) in my garden shortly before disposing of the menace.
